In the '70s, the Trinidad steel drum revolutionized Europe. Felix Rohner, a long-time steel pan player, founded PanArt in the '90s with Sabrina Scharer as his business partner. Swiss jazz and steel pan musician Reto Weber, moved to India and proposed to PanArt to create a hand-played version of the steel drum, similar to the Indian ghatam. This inspired the Handpan.
